Tchin - Tchin!

Posted

Welcome to the launch of Tika Bags' new website!!

Celebrate with us as we open our new (and functional) website. I'm so

proud of myself for constructing this new website entirely on my own. I

feel quite a sense of accomplishment.  In it you will find not only our

lovely bags, but shawl pins, lotions, alpaca teddy bears and more!

And since I am the "Francophile extraordinaire"... you will find snippets

of  French cooking with recipes along with our knitting notes.  So, if you

love France (and even if you just have a mild interest)  please follow us

monthly for news and highlights!

The French (and the rest of the world) celebrate with a glass of bubbly

champagne, however I want to tell you about my favorite celebratory

boisson or drink and that is Kir or its decadent cousin, Kir Royale.

Kir originated in Burgundy, France. It is named after the priest Canon

Felix Kir, who was a hero in the French Resistance during the Second

World War. He mixed the local white wine made from the Aligote grape

with the local blackcurrant liqueur "Creme de Cassis" and Kir was born.

Kir Royale, differs from Kir in that it is made using Champagne, rather

than a white wine.  It is therefore more expensive to made and typically

reserved for celebrations and special occasions.

Kir Royale

1/5 Creme de Cassis (room temperature)

4/5 chilled dry white wine or Champagne

Add the Creme de Cassis to the glass first,

followed by the wine, otherwise they do not

mix uniformly.

GLASSWARE: Kir is served in a white wine

glass and Kir Royale in a Champagne flute.

A Votre Sante is another more formal toast in France, literally meaning

to your health where the casual Tchin Tchin is used by young people. Its

meaning argued over, some say it's a play on words from the 60's

commercial for Cinzano.  The commercial always ended with a

very sensual "Cin-cin, Cinzano".  Others claim it to be

brought home from the Chinese Opium Wars.

My bet is on Richard Anthony's 1963 Pop hit "Tchin-Tchin" which

can be heard by clicking on the link below.

TCHIN TCHIN

Tchin tchin je me sens bien,
